Nutcracker Sweets.

Though this is our "off" year for our biennial trip to The Nutcracker, when 2 of my bestest friends asked if I wanted to join them this year, I clearly said yes.  Our ballet date is tonight, and it couldn't have come at a better time.  This has been a rough week for yours truly, with worry and lack of sleep dominating the proceedings, and getting lost in the Kingdom of Sweets is exactly what I need.

Racked has an awesome collection of photographs from the costume department of the NYC Ballet.  A few of my favorites are below, but be sure to check them all out here.

Have a merry weekend.

Happy Christmas!

A couple of cute posts for your Christmas day:

"Christmas in Bugville," created by Disney legend Art Riley, originally for Ideals magazine in the early 1950s.  Here's a little more background on the work and the artist.

And keeping with the Disney theme, I uploaded to my tumblr all the pictures I took of the Mickey's Christmas Carol window displays in Walt Disney World during our half-marathon trip last January.  Enjoy the cuteness, and God bless us, everyone!

And since I didn't do a Grateful post this week, here are my Links Worth Sharing from the past week:

For Christmas, I give you all the feels - via Style Me Pretty

Ann Street Studio's "5 Golden Rings" cinemagraph is exquisite.

Glitter Guide killed me with this whimsical White Like a Unicorn Holiday Party (where's my invite?!)

These Zimtsterne Cookies from Fig + Honey look absolutely delicious.

Design*Sponge put together a great resource guide for pretty packaging.  Save (pin) it for next year :)

Merry Christmas!

Suite Dreams.

It's our "on year" for our biennial Date Night to Joffrey Ballet's The Nutcracker, and we're going tonight.  I iz excite!

I've been saving two lovely videos to share with you of Joffrey dancers being gorgeous and effortless in Nutcracker costumes for photo shoots.  Because the videos show their movement (duh), they're even better than the final pictures.

Some of the Sheridan Road images can be found here.

P.S. If you want to squeeze it in, Joffrey's Nutcracker runs through the 28th!

Christmas Printables.

Well I came across some awesome holiday tag/food labels and thought I'd share the wealth.  WorldLabel (had never heard of this company before) has a blog (who knew?), with a whole bunch of free downloadable, customizable and printable paper goods designed by different graphic designers.  Here's a little sampling:

Bonus Round: Style Me Pretty posted some adorable printables last week in collaboration with Paper Source.

Make | Christmas Sangria.

My sister and I were put in charge of the "signature cocktail" at our annual get-together with family friends last Christmas.  We wanted a drink that was easily refillable - that didn't require a "bartender" (aka one of us) to stand by the booze and make each drink individually.  That's how we landed on a Christmas Sangria.

We created this recipe by cutting and pasting together (and then half-making up) three holiday-esque sangria recipes, which means it is not exact, but the beauty of a big punch like this is it doesn't have to be!  Once the essentials are in place, taste test (we're good at that!) and correct to perfection.

Cut into small chunks the following fruit: apple, pear, strawberry, orange and toss into bottom of pitcher or punch bowl.

Add in pomegranate seeds (maybe 1/2 cup) and cranberries (same).

Throw in 3-4 cinnamon sticks, a dash of vanilla extract, and a dash of allspice.

Add red wine to fill container up 2/3 - 3/4 of the way.  Note: the wine can be on the cheaper side.  We often use Trader Joe's $3 Chuck.  Some people like to use Spanish Red Wine, which I've definitely used in sangria recipes before to good results.  Point is: save the good stuff for another time; you can get away with cheaper bottles here.

Add 1/2 cup brandy; Add more to taste if you have a really big container.

Let the above mixture sit for up to 4 hours so the flavors mix and infuse properly.

Now comes the simple syrup, which is totally to taste.  It will likely need at least 1/2 cup to soften out the red wine, but from there, add in slow increments until you're satisfied.

Final touch: right before serving so as to preserve the bubbles, add a cup (or 2, depending on container size) of either sparkling pomegranate soda (Trader Joe's has this too!) or ginger ale, depending on your preference.  A little carbonation lightens up the whole thing nicely.

Serve the first round to your guests over ice (and a confetti swizzle stick, perhaps?).  Then leave it to them to get refills so you can make sure everything else at the party is running smoothly!

Festive Fridays | Merry Krampus.

See ya later Fall Fridays, Festive Fridays is back!

First of all, after yesterday's post, I'm sure you are all dying to hear my review of NBC's live Sound of Music, so here it is: it was a little bit weird.  The singing was beautiful, Carrie tried her darndest and Stephen Moyer had a much better singing voice than expected, but the acting was pretty stilted, and I just wanted it to be Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.  It did seem to get better as it went on.  If you watched, were you able to separate the two versions better than I could?  Did you enjoy?

Now on to more festive things: it's the first weekend of December!  Christmas activities, commence!  C and I, along with our respective siblings (it's brought us together, hehe), have recently developed a slight obsession with Krampusnacht, Germany and Austria's myth/folklore/tradition of a dark, beast-like figure who seeks out naughty children the night before St. Nikolas Tag (St. Nicholas Day), which happens to be today!  Here's hoping your shoes are filled with candy this morning, and that you weren't dragged to h-e-double-hockey sticks by Krampus last night!

Have a wonderful weekend and Merry Krampus!

P.S. The pictures of Krampusnacht here are soooo cool!  Like Halloween in December :)

christmas love.

c and i have been dating for a little over 2.5 years and this is the first christmas season we get to spend together, which makes everything just a little more special and me a very happy girl.  better still, we were able to take this whole week off so we could have christmas with both families: first with mine and then we fly to connecticut for christmas with the flemings.  next year, the order will be reversed.  we spent a lot of time discussing and thinking through the best way to split our time between our wonderful families since spoiler alert: michigan and connecticut are not all that close in proximity.  i'm sure it will be an evolving plan, but this is what we've got so far.  for those of you who have similar long distance families: what do you do for the holidays?  any strokes of brilliance or words of advice?

merry christmas eve, darlings!  may you be surrounded by those you love today and always.

festive fridays: i'll be home for christmas.

today is december 21.  i honestly cannot believe it.  we're heading home for the holidays this weekend, first to michigan, and then later next week, to connecticut, for a doubled-up christmas with both c's and my family to which i am very much looking forward.  in between then and now, i have a few presents still to wrap, we have a certain special boy's birthday to celebrate on sunday, and oh yea we have to squeeze in an 11-mile run somewhere this weekend to keep with our half marathon training schedule :/ but the busyness and the celebrations and the gifting is all part of the wonder of the season, and i wouldn't have it any other way.

have a wonderful weekend.

festive fridays: visitors.

lots of fun on the docket this weekend!  my sis and her husband will be staying with us, and we're all running a jingle bell 10k together on saturday to get ready for the disney world half just one month away (!).  but then we're going to make the rounds at all my favorite christmas in chicago stops (which i've previously blogged about here and here), spend time with friends at another christmas party, and round out the weekend with the hobbit.  not all those who wander are lost, you know!

have a wonderful weekend.

{diy} confetti swizzle sticks.

add a little sparkle to your holiday drinks this year with this so easy and fast confetti swizzle sticks diy:

supplies:
drugstore garland (in whatever color - gold, silver, red, anything! - you wish)
bamboo stick skewers
hot glue gun

cut the garland into approximately 1-inch pieces.
no need to be exact, just eyeball it; they'll come out looking close enough!

cut or break the bamboo sticks to desired length.
i just snap a couple of inches off the pointy-end.  this assures that whether the swizzle
sticks end up in champagne flutes or highball glasses, they'll stand up well.

coat the broken tip of the skewer with hot glue, grab a garland piece,
and pinch the mid-section into the glue.
careful not to burn your fingers while also trying to glue just enough of the garland to get it
to stay - you want to keep as much of the confetti "fluff" glue-free so it stays full and circular.

hold in place for a few seconds before laying aside to completely dry.

repeat!

20 minutes start to finish and I have 30 confetti swizzle sticks for the cocktail my sis and I volunteered to bring to a big family friend get-together on december 22 :)

i also made these last year for new year's eve and keep them on my bar year-round for special occasions like... the oscars (see last pic)!
