When I was training for our January half-marathon, I realized pretty quickly that podcasts were the way to go for my really long runs. They had already been C and my go-tos on car trips (as our music tastes do not exactly mesh), and they were the easiest way for me to forget about the distance (and the pain!) and just keep running. And well, I have fallen in love with comedy podcasts. I have learned so much more than I ever thought I would know about the stand-up scene in the 70s, 80s and 90s, and what comedy, both stand-up and in tv and movies, is like today. And my secret is that I am really interested and in awe. I am so far from funny that learning how funny people think fascinates me. So what are my favorites?
- Nerdist (Tom Hanks, Judd Apatow, Jimmy Kimmel, Neil Gaiman and Tina Fey are my favorites so far)
- How Did This Get Made? (Batman & Robin, Battlefield Earth, and any of the Twilight movies are my favorites so far)
- The Ricky Gervais Podcast (All. They're all great).
Now back to Judd Apatow's quote up there. In his Nerdist episode, he was discussing how it is only when he reflects back on movies he's made does he understand how he really felt during that period in his life. He now realizes he may have been a wee-bit depressed during the making of Funny People (which: obviously!). But even through blog posts and journal entries, I can tell far more about how I felt in that moment when I look back on them now. If only we understood everything about ourselves in the present, right?

I'm going to have to start checking out some of these podcasts. Been on some really long walks putting a baby to sleep and something new to listen too - especially for some laughs would be fantastic!!

Jeff Garlin has a podcast called "By The Way." If you love comedic podcasts and Curb Your Enthusiasm, you'll love this one! He had Lena Dunham and Larry David as his first guests. It's new, but already one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI really love comedy podcasts during my rush hours drive M-F. My suggestions: You already have my favorite "The Nerdist" but have you checked out the rest of Chris Hardwick's podcast empire?

and TV show after Conan partially based off this podcast!)
2. The JV Club with Janet Varney ( a podcast featuring 99% females in comedy, acting, and other entrepenaurial roles)
Also others...
3. Totally Laime w/ Elizabeth Laime (also featuring comedians and comedic actors)
4. Totally Married with Elizabeth Laime and her husband Andy (all about relationships and general life commentary)
5. Janie & Aaron Does Hollywood (best friends, one tv writer one struggling actress, this is a very quick fun podcast)
Etc: Star Talk Radio with Neil DeGrass Tyson (for science nerds out there); Nerdist Writer's Panel, and "Bald Move" Podcast for tv review/viewing; "You Had to Be There" (also two female comedians, they also have an MTV show I've never seen); "Who Charted?" (feature comedic guest going over weekly music and movie charts with the hosts)
wow, thank you SO MUCH for all the suggestions, I really appreciate it and will give them all a try. I take the bus to work so I normally read, if I had to drive I would totally be like you and just listen to comedy podcasts all the time! Thanks again.
